What Diet Culture is Costing You – EP 453

Listen on Your Favorite Podcast Player

Gentle reminder once again: health is more than just weight. The pressures of society have led us to believe otherwise, but it’s important to put faith and trust in your body and the amazing things it does for you. With so much societal pressure, social media influencers, and the latest diet trends—it’s easy to lose sight of our own health and well-being—and our wallets! In this episode, Jen and Jill talk about finding that sweet spot between health and happiness, and why rejecting the extremes of diet culture is the way to go.

When we reject the extremism of diet culture and we can find our radical middle; our balance, then we can not just save money but overall feel a lot better about ourselves and people.

Sponsors:

  • Losing weight. No, not on your body. The weight of fees on the 401(k) from your old employer. Did you know if you are carrying around a 401(k) from an old employer, that money is being charged fees because you’re no longer with the company so it’s probably charged more fees than when you were with the company and contributing to it and that is a weight on your money. We don’t want that weight on you, so use Capitalize to help you roll it over into an IRA you control. It will help you get through all of the jargon and confusion because, I will tell you, it was not easy. It was quite confusing, especially because the Vanguard interface is quite archaic, so they will help you do all that for free. You gotta try it and lose the weight of fees from your life.

Do or Diet? The True Cost of Diet Culture

If you’re doing every month of gym membership and weight watchers (food excluded), you could be spending $30,000 and that is crazy! On social media, we’re always bombarded by advertisements on ways to get the body we desire. This article from Money Guru questions if it’s worth our money, health and whether it is sustainable. Although most of the prices indicated on the article are in Euros, it translates pretty accurately to Dollars too.

What Jen + Jill have to say:

Jill appreciates how it points out not just the cost of joining something for your health but what it can also cost us in the rest of our lifestyle: the long term effects.

Getting advertisements from Instagram influencers promoting weight watchers and other diet methods is nothing new to Jen.  Jen thinks we’ve been relying on other people to tell us what to eat and how to eat, when we have not developed the skills needed to identify hunger, fullness and food that make us feel good.

Our weight does not equate to ‘health’. Jill emphasizes that the measurement of our BMI does not dictate whether or not in many cases, we are “healthy”. Will power’ is thrown around like a morality term when in reality, will power can only go for so long. There’s nothing wrong if we can’t stick to the extreme for a long time as there are other ways we can still value and take care without running ourselves thin.

A Quick Guide to Intuitive Eating

This quick guide on Intuitive Eating by Health Line teaches us all about mindfulness and creating a healthy attitude with food.

What Jen + Jill have to say:

Jill identifies the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger. Additionally, Jen tells us that hunger is not your enemy and we should respond to the early signs of it. You are not good or bad for what you eat or don’t eat–you are your own food police and you should challenge yourself from it.

Reject diet mentality or as Jill describes this as the ‘extremist’ thinking for it does not have a long term sustainability. Jen & Jill reminds us to be kind to ourselves.

If we could only eat one thing for a year, what would it be?

Tiramisu from Publix for Jen and bread and wine (…and butter) for Jill!

Well-Rounded Financial Advice

I imagine I’m probably on the younger side of the Frugal Friends podcast listeners at age 26. But I find the content Jen and Jill provide completely applicable to my life— potentially even moreso since I have the time to implement various strategies for which I will reap the benefits over time (like investing)! Jen and Jill are relevant, witty, and have great values that align with mine. I love the focus on living a generally low-waste, environmentally conscious, but not restrictive lifestyle. Out of fear of sounding cheesy, Jen and Jill legitimately make frugality fun. Recommend this podcast 1000%.
