Looking for a job? Spot the scams.

This article by the Federal Trade Commission shares overall tips to take with you when looking for a job.

  1. Are they asking you to pay for a job? Legitimate employers will never ask you to pay for a job. Be cautious of scams involving upfront payments for education, equipment, or other job-related costs, even if they seem reasonable at first glance.
  2. What do you know about them? Look up the company name alongside terms like “scam,” “review,” or “complaint” to identify any red flags or negative experiences from others.
  3. Are those reviews real? Don’t blindly trust overly positive testimonials or success stories as they might be fake. Verify the reviewers by checking if they’ve reviewed other things to ensure they’re real.
  4. What does a trusted friend or loved one think about the offer? Talk to trusted friends or loved ones about the job offer. Avoid relying solely on influencers or online personalities, as their endorsements could be manipulated or even AI-generated. Real-life opinions from people you trust are invaluable.

Top 6 Make Money Online Scams

  1. Car Wrap Scams. Scammers offer to pay you to wrap your car in advertisements, sending fake checks that clear initially but later bounce, leaving you out of pocket.
  2. Appointment Setters. While this is a legitimate job, many scammers inflate the potential earnings and require payment for training, which should be provided for free by employers.
  3. Fake Investment Opportunities. Scammers use AI to impersonate real people and lure you into fraudulent investment schemes, often without any real human interaction.
  4. Task Scams. These scams promise payment for simple online tasks, but in reality, only the scammers profit.
  5. Post Office Jobs. Scammers create fake job listings that require application fees, which legitimate employers would never do.
  6. Mystery Shopping Scams. While some mystery shopping opportunities are real, scammers may ask you to buy gift cards and send them the numbers, which is a clear red flag.

A time you suspected you were being scammed online?
