Things we don’t buy because we’re frugal

Happy Wednesday, friends!

Recently, Jen posted an amazing Instagram reel highlighting 10 things she doesn’t buy because they don’t align with her values.

It was a great reminder of how important value-based spending is to our overall financial goals.

Especially as we transition through new seasons of life, like taking a pay cut to return to school, for instance. Or welcoming a new child into your home.

Sometimes our values and our spending shifts, and that’s perfectly okay!

Ultimately it’s important to remember no one’s list looks quite the same.

Here are our tips for narrowing down YOUR list of things you can say easy no’s to spending on!

💡 Find Your NO

  1. Transaction Inventory. 📝 Gather a list of ALL of your purchases over the last 90 days into a spreadsheet, or printed out.

  2. Look for Repeats. ↻ Scan the list and highlight any regular purchases (i.e. items you buy weekly or more) or stores you tend to frequent (the locations you shop from most often)

  3. Introspection. 💭 Consider what you bought and ask yourself:

    • How did buying that make me feel? How do I feel about it now?

    • What need did buying this item meet for me? Did it satisfy the need? Would there be a better way to meet that need more fully?

    • Is there something I wish I did with that money instead?

  4. Decide. 🎯 Name 1-2 items you will choose to NOT spend on in the next 30 days (or longer) and what you will do instead.

Use Jen’s reel as inspiration and begin your own list.

Then, let us know what your easy no’s and better yes’es are for YOU when it comes to spending!

Spending is a skill and you can learn to master it. If you’ve ever struggled with being unable to stick to a budget or felt guilty about spending on something you enjoy, Jen and Jill’s upcoming book is going to be your next favorite read.
