Hiya ☀️
When you hear the word ‘minimalism’, what comes to mind? If it’s a white room with a singular Scandinavian desk & chair then it’s time for a revamp because that’s NOT the kind of minimalism we’re about.
Instead we like finding our ‘enough’, learning what makes our physical spaces feel peaceful vs. chaotic, and leaning into intentionality with how we manage ALL of our resources.
That’s where minimalism steps in. By putting it into practice & changing our thought patterns, we reap the benefits that come with a lifestyle shift. Just like eating healthier has a positive impact on the body, so does minimalism on our finances.
✨ Financial Benefits of Minimalism
⏱️ It’s efficient. It sounds counterintuitive, but hear me out. By purchasing, doing, & owning less, we actually make room for more in our lives. More time spent with loved ones, more time in nature, and more money going to what we want, rather than what we impulse purchased. As we practice minimalism, we look toward new habits that are more efficient than previous ones. Try putting these into place today:
-
Automate your savings/bill-pay – this saves us time & brain power.
-
Hire a laundry service – less time spent on household chores = more time to make money (or do what we want!).
-
Cancel subscriptions – less subscriptions = more $$$.
🧾 It combats consumerism. As we embrace minimalism, we align with our core values. By doing so, we can make the choice to purchase less and refrain from the endless cycle of consumerism. When we do make purchases, it’s intentional. This intentionality leads to saving more, reducing our environmental footprint, and less mental clutter. Check out these three suggestions below to practice:
-
Thrift store first – secondhand stores reduce fast fashion sales, protect the environment, and breathe new life into old items. For help buying secondhand first, get April’s 30-day secondhand challenge here! (use code CHALLENGE for 50% off)
-
Declutter – get creative with what you have before buying something new.
-
Barter – Trade for necessities with friends, farmers, & on Facebook Marketplace before hitting up the box store.
🌱 It’s an investment in your life & community. From taking cooking classes to a healthy 401k, cutting spending is an investment in your future and your community. By spending less and automating our savings, we can choose to reallocate extra funds into small businesses, charities, and organizations within our communities, as well as ourselves. Consider:
-
Moving your money to a local credit union – most $$$ will stay within the community and go to small business loan investments, building housing, & public infrastructure (HOT TIP! 🔥).
-
Pay off your debt – if your money isn’t tied up in interest, you would spend less time at work. If that was the case, more time could be devoted to giving back to your community.
-
Outsource what you can – whether it’s finding an accountant or hiring a maid, outsourcing keeps money in the community and is an investment in yourself.
Minimalism is a deeper layer of simplicity—it’s a path to move forward intentionally, as well as a reclamation of power from consumerism. Try putting just one of these suggestions into place today, and see how your finances flourish over time!
