Investing Through the Lens of A Woman

One thing Nicole loves about her work is bringing a fresh perspective to something many women have long seen as complicated—investing. She finds purpose in educating her clients, helping them understand why investing matters, how to invest more money, and how fees work.

As for how much we need to know to get it right, Nicole reminds us that the idea that investing is too complicated for women is simply a marketing tactic designed to make people feel like they need to hand it off to someone else. With confidence, she encourages that if you pass highschool algebra you can understand investing.

Financial Independence Starts Here

Nicole presented two realities. One is that many women feel investing is too complicated and that it’s only for the rich. But the truth is, women are statistically better investors than men—and often invest without even realizing it. Even as a stay-at-home mom, where Nicole began her investing journey, there are long-term benefits that can pay off in the future.

She also shared a bit of her journey watching her dad stress about retirement for all her adult life, and that sparked inspiration for her to invest now to not have the same worries as her dad did, so she jumped into the financial independence movement, figuring out how to make her money work for her. With some side hustles and smart investing, she and her partner hit $100k in investments by 27. She believes time is your best asset.

Investing Made Simple

Starting with resources and good education is essential for Nicole. She recommended books like I Will Teach You to Be Rich by Ramit Sethi, The Simple Path to Wealth by J. L. Collins, and Little Book of Common Sense Investing. Next, she suggests choosing an account that offers tax benefits and understanding where your money will be invested to avoid mistakes. And finally, she emphasizes the importance of deciding how much money you’re willing to invest to reach your goals.

Your Next Steps After Retirement

Once retirement feels secure, the next step is figuring out where to invest beyond retirement accounts. Nicole suggests starting by identifying your wealth-building goals. For some, that might mean having more time with family, while others may want to work less so what might be best suited for them is growing a business. Just like that, knowing your goals can guide you in deciding where to put your money so it works best for you.

What was your first-ever big girl investment? How did you feel?

  • Nicole: Buying stocks when they were down felt exciting, the day turned out to be fun!
  • Jill: Opening a Roth IRA left her feeling amazing and empowering.
  • Jen: Investing in an IPO felt pretty cool.

CAN'T GET ENOUGH!

I can't get enough of this book. I have the audiobook and listened in the car every chance I got, now I want to take notes so I bought the Kindle to start my journey again! I wish they would make this a College Senior year must-read! I want to start a book/podcast club in my area but I have not heard back from anyone in the community on FB. I am open to it! You both have inspired me in so many ways. I have always been a couponer but lost some of my hope and strength because of medical issues and frustration.
