Genet “GG” Gimja is the host of the Progressive Pockets podcast, a show about social impact and personal finance. The podcast explores how everyday people can make the most of their financial choices—such as spending, donating, banking and investing—to align with their values and contribute to building a better world. When GG isn’t reading the newspaper, you’ll find her either traveling with family or menu planning for a party.

Voting With Your Dollar

“Voting With Your Dollar,” as defined by GG, means using your money in a way that aligns with your values and beliefs. In today’s world, everyone has causes they care about—whether it’s environmental sustainability, homelessness, animal welfare, or the well-being of women in society.

GG emphasizes that spending is a decision with power. That’s why when choosing where to shop, she looks for opportunities to use her money in ways that support the kind of world she wants to help build.

Where To Align Your Values

One of the easiest ways to align your spending with your goals is to shop locally. Whether you’re buying gifts, meals, or other products, shopping locally ensures that your money supports growing businesses in your community.

If local options don’t align with your standards, GG suggests checking product labels. The B Corporation label, for instance, indicates businesses that meet high standards for social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability, balancing profit with purpose. And if it all feels overwhelming, don’t hesitate to reach out to a friend who’s knowledgeable about these basics!

Making a Difference Affordably

GG reminds us that even on a tight budget, you can still make a big impact with your spending choices. One effective way is exploring Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). These organizations keep your money safe while supporting low-income communities, so you’re using your funds to create change without needing to spend extra.

Another great tool is MightyDeposits.com, which helps you find banks that align with your values. By choosing where to bank and invest wisely, you’re not just improving your own financial situation—you’re making a positive difference in the world around you.

Small Steps, Big Progress

It’s important to remember not to get discouraged if you feel like you’re not making progress. When GG started, she didn’t have a clear goal, which made her feel stuck. But once she set a specific goal, things started improving.

She suggests starting with something you are familiar with, and then break it into easy steps so you don’t get overwhelmed and end up doing nothing. Taking small actions can help you stay motivated and make steady progress.

What’s one way you align your spending with what matters to you?

For GG, it’s being aware of women and money and finding ways to advocate for them. For Jen, it’s saying no to unnecessary purchases and banking with a credit union. For Jill, it’s in her decision to maintain only one vehicle and her efforts to be as generous as possible with her money.
