Listen on Your Favorite Podcast Player

You know the drill, and you’re definitely not new to this game. We might not be able to completely stop the forces but the more we understand why we tend to impulse purchase or what drives our choices, the better equipped we’ll be to interrupt those patterns—and the more confident we’ll feel in our spending. In this episode, Jen and Jill give us a sneak peak of this part of ‘Buy What You Love Without Going Broke’!

The way to say ‘no’ to impulse purchase is not to simply stop and say no, it’s to find alternatives.

  • Easy yeses. Like when someone offers you a free hot dog, or to clean your floors, or a lifetime supply of gum. There are things in life that we can respond to with an instant, emphatic YES! Like pre-ordering our book ‘Buy what you love without going broke’. The title is a banger, the content is fire, and the authors are slightly unhinged but completely trustworthy. So when we tell you to stop what you’re doing and pre-order ‘buy what you love without going broke’ we know it’s an easy YES! You won’t regret this decision come January when you’re ready to set yourself up for financial success in 2025 and you’ve got this puppy in your hands.

Redirecting Spending Through Creative Alternatives

In our book, Buy What You Love Without Going Broke, we examine the root causes of impulse spending and provide strategies to combat it. This section focuses on understanding why we make impulse purchases and offers ways to say no to them.

What Jen + Jill have to say:

Jen believes that habit spending is the ultimate reason why many of us impulse spend. If we take the time to understand our habits, we can see how other roots evolve. One way to do this is by keeping a 90-day transaction log to identify the cues behind our spending patterns. Even if these habits are already part of our lifestyle, we can always make minor tweaks to shift our behaviors.

Another factor Jill mentioned is shopping as an activity. But it’s not about staying home; it’s about finding alternatives that align with what really matters to us. As shopping can quickly become a habit, cultivating creativity in finding alternatives is essential. Stress shopping is another thing! Except, in reality, we associate it with every kind of emotion known. To say no, have a list of alternative activities that provide that dopamine rush, like trying a new recipe, getting outside, stretching, hobbies, walking, etc.

How to Take Control of Your Purchases

Who we follow and how we respond to others’ preferences shape our spending decisions. As Jill pointed out, social proof makes us crave what those around us have. It’s important to recognize this influence and question our impulses. To stay on track, make a list and give yourself time, or limit your following to those people who reflect your values.

And don’t forget the thrill of the hunt for good deals, as Jen calls it. While that rush can be a good thing sometimes, exploring alternatives like setting goals or trying something new can boost your creativity and confidence more.

How do you extend grace to yourself after making an impulse purchase?

Jill simply returns it. If it cannot be returned, she makes sure to use it, and learn from it. While Jen looks at her spending with neutrality.

I love these girls! Practical, relevant, and a little weird.

This podcast is not only full of PRACTICAL tips and tricks to save money but full of fun and weirdness too. Listening to Jen and Jill is like sitting in your back patio on a perfect summer afternoon drinking a margarita with your best girls and talking money. They are so purely themselves and it makes them so relatable. The topics are almost always RELEVANT to me as a woman in her early 30s with no kids but there’s something for everyone. This show is really a breath of fresh air amid all the stuffy or bro dude Personal Finance Podcasts that are out there. Jen and Jill are Girls’ Girls and I love it!
