Frugal Entertaining & Hosting – EP 451

Listen on Your Favorite Podcast Player

Some of us embrace a horror-themed festivity, some of us love twinkly lights, but no matter your style, there’s a holiday just around the corner for everyone. And what’s a celebration without heartfelt connections, right? In this episode, Jen and Jill sparks the good that comes with hosting and share their tips for throwing an amazing party on a budget.

It is good to open our homes no matter how big or small, no matter how clean, no matter how aesthetic it is to be able to have connection.

  • The horrors. The horrors persist, like opening an email ten seconds before you record to find out your child’s school is closing for the next two days and you don’t know what to do with yourself because you have five interviews and meetings over the next two days. And another horror is that interest rates on high yield savings accounts are going down and so if you have been waiting to open a high yield savings account, you cannot afford to wait anymore, CIT is still one of the highest. It is 4.5% APY which is still really good. If you want to go with our current favorite, go ahead at frugalfriendspodcast.com/CIT

The Healthiness of Gatherings

This article by Alyssa Brown lists down seven playing reasons why throwing a party is good for your health supported with cases and studies.

What Jen + Jill have to say:

Right off the bat, Jen shares that throwing a party is great for your health. Research shows friends boost your immune system, creating diverse social networks that lower heart disease risk and promote longevity. She also notes that socializing enhances memory and serves as a mood booster, helping regulate emotions and improve our well-being.

Jill adds another point from a psychologist: hosting can help you face and manage stress. For her, it’s a way to change things up at home. And funny as it sounds, hosting can lead to better sleep! Plus, you might find your organizational skills improving along the way.

Gatherings Made Easy and Affordable

This article by The Berry Basics dives into how to host a party or get together on a budget.

What Jen + Jill have to say:

Jen believes timing is everything! Get-togethers don’t have to be fancy dinners—they can be brunch, morning coffee, or snacks with games. And if someone offers to help, embrace it, rest assured they’d love to contribute too. If you want to add some spark, decorate with things you have at home or nature, or skip the decor entirely and use good music. And for a great party, use in-season and on-sale food.

Jill suggests getting creative with e-invites instead of sending physical mail. If really necessary, you can grab some discount paper products, but if you can, use the resources that you have at home. You can also save on drinks by making them from scratch!

Do you enjoy being a host or a guest more? Why?

Jill enjoys hosting the most because she loves curating the entire experience. Jen, on the other hand, enjoys inviting people over now that they have a better space, but she also loves visiting other people’s homes.
