There’s a saying that goes “a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes is better than a master of one”! As we approach the last part of our Debt-Free Summer, let’s remember that we can do so much more! In this episode, Jen and Jill are joined by Denise to share a four year debt-free journey, and how career shifts and good money mindset helped her get through debt.
Going through the front door with everybody else, it’s very hard to get a seat at a table. Therefore making connections and building relationships is what will open a lot of opportunities over time.

Strategizing Outside the Box
Denise started her debt-free journey after returning from New Zealand—a period she refers to as her quarter-life crisis. Though she landed the job she wanted, the living expenses that came with it led to a stack of debts.
Inspired by an article she once read, she made it her goal to live debt-free. To do that, she switched jobs to increase her income which allowed her to negotiate higher salaries and gain new skills. Denise also shares consistent habits that helped her such as tracking expenses through spreadsheets and journals and cutting unnecessary spending.
Wonders of Switching Jobs
For four years, Denise has been paying off her $19,000 debt which includes car loan, student loan, furnishings for their apartment. Her debt-free journey highlights the wonders that job hopping can offer. As well as advocating for oneself, connecting with others, and learning from their experiences for career growth.
Now that she shares this win with her partner—whose debt has been paid off as well—Denise plans to save for future expenses, invest in real estate, and pursue creative projects.
The Power of Good Money Mindset
Money mindset is really important when journeying debt. Because it’s not easy and requires a lifelong commitment to consistent effort and discipline. But like Denise, who once had a scarcity mindset, she is now learning to find the perfect balance between saving and enjoying life.
If there’s one piece of advice she offers to others in similar situations, it’s this: know your worth, and remember that you can do whatever you set your mind to, so believing in yourself is what will get you far in life.
One of the takeaways is “advocating for yourself.” How do you practice self-advocacy in your personal finance?
Jen usually avoids voicing out and lets things slide because she feels undeserving (which isn’t true). So, to advocate for herself, she promises to practice reaching out more and claiming what she’s entitled to. On the other hand, Jill has improved at saying ‘no’ to friends and family when necessary. She recognizes that money matters and sets healthy boundaries to advocate for herself.

Literally My Best Friends and No, It’s Not Sad
I always thought I was frugal, with little to no wiggle room in my spending and habits. Even while listening to this podcast on and off for several years, I would hear Jen and Jill’s advice without heeding it— I loved what they were saying but pretty much figured it was none of my business. BOY WAS I WRONG. At some point, my frugal friends journey went from “tips and tricks” to a complete mind and life style shift. Jen and Jill are so real and realistic in goals and strategies, they emphasize your health and happiness as a whole human being, they reframe spending and personal finance as tools to live your values. Jen and Jill will become your best friends and the only people you care to hear from on financial matters… or any matters… I now look forward to new episodes, relisten to old ones, and learn something new every single time. If you are a woman with an income, a mom, a partner, a foodie, a DIYer, a cruise enthusiast, a hot dog lover, or none of the above, you will love this podcast as I do. No extra charge for the joy of watching the hosts become more and more unhinged. Only better with age. Thank you ladies for everything, please never stop. I’m not crying you’re crying. Xoxo
