Buying smoke detectors on a budget

Hi, friends! 👋

We recognize there’s some things we spend money on not because we love them per se, but because we love what they represent.

Like smoke detectors.

No homeowners love replacing them or their batteries when they inevitably start beeping at 2am.

What we truly value is the safety and peace of mind these devices provide, especially when we get distracted—like ending up in the shower mid-making scrambled eggs (or is that just me?).

Smoke detectors are essential for protecting your family and property in the event of a fire, making it crucial to invest in them wisely and replace them regularly, typically every 10 years.

Here are four key considerations when buying a new smoke detector, and we made a list of detectors you can easily buy through Amazon! **

🧯 Four Things to Consider When Buying Smoke Detectors

Standards and Regulations: Always choose smoke detectors that meet safety standards set by recognized organizations like Underwriters Laboratories (UL). And, check local regulations to ensure compliance, especially if you rent or sell your home. This can save you from legal and safety issues down the road.

Types of Smoke Detectors: Ionization detectors are best at detecting fast-flaming fires while Photoelectric detectors are more effective at detecting smoldering fires. For a comprehensive approach on a budget, consider combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. These models offer dual protection and can be a cost-effective solution compared to purchasing separate units.

📝 As a side note, we recommend adding a natural gas detector. It turns out natural gas isn’t always detectable by smell, and standard smoke and carbon monoxide detectors won’t pick it up. Considering the time I (Misti) overlooked a gas leak in my basement for MONTHS, you better believe I’m budgeting for all the detectors when I end my nomad season.

Power Source: Battery-operated are usually cheaper and easier to install, making them ideal for a budget-friendly option. Look for models with long-life batteries that can last up to 10 years, reducing the need for frequent replacements. Hardwired detectors, are more expensive and require professional installation, BUT they don’t need battery replacements and can be a good investment in the long run.

Placement and Maintenance: Location, location, location. It’s the key to effectiveness! Install detectors in every bedroom, hallway, cooking area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Also consider buying interconnected detectors so that if one were triggered, they all would be. AND remember to text your detectors at least quarterly.
