How Lack of Purpose Drives Your Impulse Spending with Jordan Grumet – EP 476

Listen on Your Favorite Podcast Player

Alright, hear us out: finding your purpose doesn’t have to be this do-or-die, all-or-nothing thing because that kind of thinking will drive your finances crazy, thinking you’ll find it once you have everything, but nope, not at all. In this episode, Jen and Jill are joined by Jordan Grumet of Earn & Invest Podcast to share simple reminders on how to find your purpose and what it really means to have one.

You don’t find purpose, you create it.

Jordan Grumet is a hospice doctor who pursued financial independence. He writes about how we can integrate a better sense of purpose into our financial lives. He is also the host of the Earn & Invest Podcast.

The Meaning of Purpose

Jordan defines purpose as to where we are now and the actions we do to fill our life with the things that keep us going. He agrees that many people think purpose is this huge thing. Either you find it and life is great, or you don’t, and everything feels lost, but it’s not just that.

For him, the reason why purpose causes us anxiety is because we make it this big, hard-to-define thing. So, we look for it in places like social media, ads, and marketing, convincing us that we can buy our way into purpose.

Purpose Isn’t All-or-Nothing

Jordan references studies showing that having a sense of purpose in life is linked to better health, happiness, and longevity. He also highlights research indicating that up to 91% of people experience “purpose anxiety” at some point in their lives. He suggests we might be thinking about purpose the wrong way, breaking it down into two things: Big P Purpose and Little p Purpose.

Big P Purpose is what society often tells us to find. It’s this big, audacious, and goal-focused purpose. The problem is that it’s all-or nothing, making it easy to fail and often leaving us feeling bad. On the other hand, little p Purpose is abundance-focused and “all-or-all.” It’s about enjoying the process of doing things you love, regardless of what you accomplish.

Finding Anchors for Your Little p Purpose

Jordan finds little p Purpose very abundant and everywhere but he admits that it had to be anchored on something. And in order to find it he gave four keys to consider:

  1. Ask yourself what do you regret not ever doing.
  2. Reflect on the joys in your childhood.
  3. Subtract the things you loathe and see what’s left that you love to do.
  4. Use the Spaghetti method by trying a bunch of things and see what sticks.

Aligning Purpose and Spending

Jordan emphasizes that purpose has no rules—it can be short-term or long-term, and you may find it, outgrow it, and find another. Winning the game means filling your calendar with activities that fill you up and removing what you don’t love. He suggests using tools like joy of addition, art of subtraction, and substitution. It takes time, but you can gradually shift by evaluating how you spend your time.

In his words, life already feels exhausting when living paycheck to paycheck, and sometimes the easiest thing to do is buy something short-term to feel better. But once we clearly see our purpose, we realize we don’t need to buy anything—we just need to take action. Once it’s clear to you, you start to understand what you truly value and align your spending with those values.
