Dealing with Difficult Conversations

This article by Emily Cahill walks us through effectively working together with our partners to pay off debt.

What Jen + Jill have to say:

Jill believes the first step to approaching this issue is identifying the situation and understanding what’s behind the hesitance before initiating any conversation. She also emphasizes that it’s important to choose the right timing to make the discussion effective and avoid assigning blame.

Jen highlights the importance of identifying the ‘why’ in this situation. She shares her experience of discovering her “why” and realizing that achieving what we want becomes much easier once we’ve paid off our debt. This step can inspire relationships to prioritize saving aside while working to pay down debt.

Ways to Getting them on Board

As crazy as it sounds, scheduling a date night to discuss it can be a great idea. Every partner is different, so figuring out the best approach is key. Is it over dinner? During a walk? Speaking their language is the best way to help them understand where you want to go.

Next, Jen suggests choosing a payoff strategy that works best for you and feels the most motivating. There’s no right or wrong way to do it—as long as you work together to improve your financial situation as a team. To stay on track, Jill suggests celebrating milestones to reward yourself and keep the motivation going.

How did you discuss debt matters with your partner?

For Jill, her partner understood the situation going into their marriage and considered it their debt, not just hers. For Jen, Travis helped her discover a deeper reason for pursuing debt freedom as their “one thing,” making the journey more bearable by showing each other grace.
