Do you ever find yourself awed by the curiosity of children, and maybe even a little jealous of how easily it comes to them?

As we get older, our interactions with the world are guided by our life experiences, patterns of relating, and an established understanding of who we are.

Somewhere along the way many of us lose our natural curiosity, but it’s time to reclaim this ability because it is the cornerstone of learning, growing, and developing worthwhile habits.

Breaking Down Barriers to Curiosity 🚧

1. Following expectations. How often do you make spending decisions based on what you think you “should” do instead of what you really value? Or based on what you think you’re capable of, as told by a narrow framing of your personality (cue the Enneagram test) and what you’ve done in the past? Challenge yourself to self-reflect through kind questions and re-evaluate where you can lean into new patterns instead of relying on external expectations.

2. Procrasti-spending. You know, avoiding the actual work by buying something that will help with the work. Like purchasing a self-reflection journal instead of just starting with one you already have. Or buying another self-help book instead of reading the ones already on your bookshelf.

3. Fear. Whether it’s thinking the worst of yourself, or concern that you won’t know how to fix whatever you may find broken, it can be easier to ignore it and continue existing as you were. 

The type of curiosity-practicing we’re advocating for is one that’s kind and woven into our lives. This type of self-reflection offers a gentler approach to facing our fears and possibly even finding creative solutions, and alternate spending plans.

📌 Carve out a few minutes each day to ask yourself questions, make new discoveries, and implement new patterns. A simple what are my needs today and how can I meet them fully and creatively? can make a world of difference in the way we live and spend.
