Are Farmers Market More Expensive Than The Grocery Store?

This article by Fed by the Farm is written by Sara, who lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, known for its flourishing farmer market. She compares buying from certified organic, locally grown farmers markets to grocery stores by buying the same products and listing their prices.

What Jen + Jill have to say:

Jen prioritizes convenience over organic and locally grown produce, initially favoring grocery stores over farmers markets. But she acknowledges the appeal of farmers markets, especially for cooking experimentation and during the summer when produce is at its peak. Local farms may offer even better prices than farmer’s markets.

Jill values the quality and support for local businesses that farmers markets provide, despite potential time constraints. There are benefits to eating seasonally and engaging with farmers for cooking tips and recipe ideas. You may find a lot of produce, like basil, bell peppers, and bok choy, more affordable at farmers markets than grocery stores. The author of the article shared that the total bill for all items she got from the farmers market was $44.25, while the same items from the grocery store cost $51.87, which means she saved $7.62 at the farmers market.

15 Tips You Need When Shopping At The Farmers' Market

This article by the Tasting Table lists down ways to shop better at a farmer’s market.

What Jen + Jill have to say:

Jill recommends starting with a lap around the market before purchasing to avoid impulsive buying and get better deals. Go with a list–take inventory of what you will need to buy but be willing to get creative, and inquire about seconds or less visually appealing produce that may still be good to eat. Jen suggests mornings for peak freshness and closing times for potential bargains, especially on Sundays. Ask the vendors about their pesticide methods and be aware of signs of unscrupulous vendors, acknowledging that not all non-organic produce is bad.

Something you cannot pass up at a Farmers’ Market

Jen enjoys the vibes of farmers markets, often grabbing a coffee while exploring. Meanwhile, Jill is drawn to the samples available at farmers markets, similar to the sampling experience at Costco and the meat being offered.
